WalkyDog®: Pros and Cons, The Vet says...

Obesity is a growing problem among family animals, including all the complications that go along with it — like diabetes and arthritis.

"A regular workout is ideal for keeping your dog fit," suggests Dr. Salvatore Mistretta, a veterinarian in Reggio Emilia, Italy, "and getting them to follow their master's bike may also be a chance for both to play and have fun together." Unfortunately, not everybody has the advantage of wide open spaces where a dog can be freed. More often than not, dog owners can only make use of small city parks where regulations require the use of a leash.

Today, thanks to the WalkyDog®, a new type of pet accessory specifically developed for biking dog-lovers, it is easier than ever to give your dog a great workout. "Following their master by bike," explains Dr. Mistretta, "forces the animal to perform an aerobic exercise which not only helps control weight, but also benefits their entire cardio-respiratory system. By riding in the open air, the animal also has a chance to see people and other dogs, which is good from a behavioral standpoint."

Use of the WalkyDog® is suggested for adult dogs, subject to a complete veterinary examination. Such an examination should make sure the animal doesn't suffer from any cardiovascular problems. Older dogs should also undergo a cardiological exam to evaluate the efficiency of their cardiac system. In the case of large breed puppies, it may be better to choose a different workout. In fact, excessive exertion before the age of one may facilitate the appearance of osteo-articular diseases — hip dysplasia, for instance — especially among breeds that are already genetically predisposed (like the German shepherd, for example).

Even for fit and healthy dogs, it is not advisable to force them to practice any sport activity during the hottest hours of the day (especially during the summertime) or after meals. The dog's behavior is important as well, notably with big dogs like Alaskan Malamutes. "The animal," says Dr. Mistretta, "should already be used to following their master on a leash without pulling, and they should be accustomed enough not to be distracted by their surroundings."

The WalkyDog® was specifically developed to allow the biker to guide the dog in complete safety — by keeping both hands tightly gripped on the handlebars. The packaging contains assembly instructions and some useful suggestions for adapting the position of both the leash and the biker according to the dog's size.
